Trying a new workout can feel easier when you know what will happen. A first CrossFit class usually includes a welcome, a warm-up, skill or movement practice, the workout, and a brief cool-down. You do not need to arrive already fit or know every exercise. The coach will explain the movements and help you choose appropriate options. Come ready to ask questions, move at your own pace, and focus on learning rather than keeping up with anyone else.
How Class Usually Flows
Plan to arrive a little early so you can introduce yourself, share any injuries or movement concerns, and ask where to put your belongings. The coach may explain the workout and the equipment before the group begins. If you are unsure about anything, speak up before the warm-up; a quick conversation helps the coach guide you from the start.
Most classes move through a group warm-up, practice of one or more movements, and a workout. The workout may be timed or based on completing a set amount of work. The coach will describe the goal, explain how to use the equipment, and tell you when to start and stop. Some classes finish with stretching or a short cool-down.
Coaching and Movement Practice
Expect the coach to demonstrate movements, explain key points, and watch how you perform them. They may offer reminders during practice and check in as the workout continues. You are not expected to remember every instruction immediately. Ask the coach to repeat a cue or show a movement again if you need a clearer view.
Good coaching is about helping you move safely and understand the purpose of each exercise, not pushing you to match someone else. Tell the coach if something feels painful, unfamiliar, or uncomfortable. A coach can help distinguish a challenging effort from a movement that needs to change, but you should stop and speak up if you feel unwell.
Adjustments Make It Your Workout
CrossFit workouts can be adjusted to suit your experience, mobility, strength, and energy that day. A coach might reduce the weight or repetitions, shorten a distance, or choose a simpler version of a movement. For example, you may practice a bodyweight squat before adding weight, or use a step-up in place of a jump.
The adjusted version is still the workout. Use a load and pace that let you keep control and follow the coach’s guidance. If you have an injury or health concern, share relevant details before class and ask whether the planned movements are suitable. You can also request another option if an exercise does not feel right as you go.
What to Bring and Wear
Wear comfortable athletic clothes that let you bend, squat, and reach without restriction. Choose supportive shoes that feel stable for lifting and general movement. Bring a water bottle and, if you use one, a towel. You usually do not need to buy special equipment before your first visit; ask the gym whether it provides what the class requires.
Arrive hydrated and leave enough time to check in and hear the coach’s instructions. Eat in a way that leaves you comfortable for exercise, and let the coach know if you need a pause. At Dallas Masters CrossFit, you can contact the team ahead of time to ask what to expect at your first session.
